Une source de courant charge un condensateur qui est monté en série dans le primaire d'une bobine d'allumage classique.
En parallèle sur ces deux éléments, se trouve un thyristor qui, lorsqu'il est commandé, provoque la décharge du condensateur à travers le bobinage. Cette décharge crée une variation rapide d'intensité dans le primaire, donnant naissance à une haute tension secondaire de courte durée.
L'impulsion de commande qui déclenche le thyristor est fournie par un capteur électromagnétique au passage du picot soudé sur le moyeu.
